Inappropriate Story Book?
Closed

After being an educator for 20 years, a Mississippi assistant principal was fired after he read a children's book "I Need a New Butt" to his Grade 2 class over Zoom.

The book is targeted at children ages 4-10 and is a story of a boy who notices the crack in his butt for the first time. He mistakenly believes it must be broken and decides he needs a new one.

The description from the book's publisher reads:
"Will he choose an armour-plated butt? A rocket butt? A robot butt"? Find out in this quirky tale of a tail, which features hilarious rhymes and delightful illustrations. Children and parents will love this book — no ifs, ands, or butts about it!

The assistant principal was called into the office the next day and was reprimanded. He says ... "I know my audience. Second-grade students are reluctant readers. You've got to show them that books can be fun and silly and engaging. You want them to put down their phone and pick up a book."

As far as he knew there were no complaints from any parents, but he was asked to resign. He walked out of the building after saying that he would not be resigning. He got in his car and cried all the way home.

Two days later he was fired.

I am totally on the side of this teacher. Books should be fun and funny and the content of this book is very relatable to any grade 2 student. There are all kinds of books that are silly. Everyone has a butt, it is only the adults that turn it into some kind of sexualized story and deem it inappropriate.

Would you read this to a 7 or 8 year old - I know I would and I'm sure they'd be engaged in listening and would laugh and laugh.

Yes, it is silly but that age would love it.

YES, I would- this is ludicrous! We have far too few male teachers as it is, and he is spot-on about 2nd grade kids.Robert Munsch has a book about farts, and Captain Underpants rules the kids' book list. I am saddened and disgusted to hear this. If you hear about any petitions, etc., please let me know.

My nephew's favourite series around this age was the "Captain Underpants" series...so I don't see how that can be okay (there are quite a few books and even spin offs) but this is somehow not okay? It's not like it was profane or pornographic, people need to calm down, but when it comes to kids, some moms get very Karen-y very quick!
