When you were a kid, did you think certain things were for rich people only?

When I was a young kid, my older brother-in-law always brought Russell Stover chocolates to our family dinners during the holidays. I loved those gooey chocolates, and each one was a surprise. I never knew what flavor would be inside each chocolate. Those chocolates were such a treat for us. I always thought, he must be rich, because my mother never bought candies like Russel Stovers, and back in those days, they were considered pricey. He also use to put money in our prize eggs during our Easter egg hunts. I was sure, he must be rich. As a kid, did you think certain things were for the rich?

Yes, believe it or not I once thought fruit was for rich people. We never had any. A friend of my moms gave me some money to get candy and I went and bought a peach and a plum. When I got back home, I put them in the fridge to chill and the friend was so shocked that I had spent the money on fruit and not candy. Reply

I didn't think about whether we were rich or poor or middle class as a child. I remember as a teen that a couple of girls got John Romaine pocketbooks but I never thought to ask my mom for one because I figured only wealthy people bought designer accessories. I've never understood the desire for designer anything when I can find what I want in a non-designer label. Reply

I never really thought about it. Reply

Yes, just about everything because we were very poor and every time we mentioned something that we had seen that we might want, my parents always said the same thing, "that's for rich people, we don't have that kind of money". Reply
