Locked Public Mailboxes
Closed

Recently, I had to mail some "snail mail". I prefer to take any mail to the post office rather than leave it in my mailbox. I wasn't able to get to the post office while it was open, but I thought "no problem", I'll just go after hours and drop it in the box...there is a special driveway just for that. Well, to my surprise, the mailbox was locked with big red metal lock. There were two drop boxes, and they were both locked. I couldn't figure out what was going on. I ran into another woman who was dropping off some mail. Just by chance, she used to work at the post office, and she told me a lot of the public mailboxes get vandalized, so maybe that's why it was locked. It seems like it defeats the purpose of a drop box to lock it after hours, but I guess it makes sense if it was vandalized. Luckily, the lobby of the post office was still open so we were able to drop our mail there and the woman told me it is much safer to do that. I later asked my mailman if he knew about the locked boxes, and he didn't know anything. Have you ever seen this?

We used to have public mailboxes in every shopping center but they took them all away. They still have a box at the post office that you can drive up and drop it off or go inside the lobby but it is on the other side of town from me. I drive over there if it is anything important.

In my town ever since around the last election public mailboxes' have a slit in them so it is too small to vandalize the mail. I heard on the news that voter drop off boxes got vandalized in a nearby town when some person put a burning item into the box.

No I have never seen a locked public mailbox but agree it makes sense. It's also a good idea not to leave outgoing mail in your own mailbox out on the curb and then put that flag up. That's just an invitation for thieves to grab your mail

No--our drive-through drop off mailboxes (especially at the Post Office) have never been locked!
