What Is Pop Art?

Many works of art could claim to be pop art. How many of those are indeed pop art is debatable. Before finding out how, we need to know what #PopArt is.

Art is by definition is subjective. What is high art for some, is inaccessible nonsense for others. Examples of such art that is largely not understood is modern art which is steeped in history and political connotations.

So what makes pop art different from such art. The answer is in its name. Pop art is popular art, which means it is the kind of art that can be appreciated by large amounts of people. Defining broadly it can include comic art, movie posters, or advertisement copies. These are what are called generation-defining artworks.

Before it took off the world over, Pop Art as an art was practised in America and in a way the artists there pioneered the art form.

However, many serious artists have also dabbled in this artform. The most famous name in Pop Art is Andy Warhol. The pic below is his Marilyn Monroe. He combines the beauty of photograph negatives with the many aspects of Marilyn Monroe's appeal. This image is entirely handdrawn but it has a print like finish. This is his signature. His other works of art is the Campbell soup. It reflected his favour of America's capitalist stance and how it affected people's daily life. Warhol's ideas about modern life continue to influence even today, especially about social media.

Even if you are unaware or uninterested in Art, unknowingly you have a #PopArt that appeals to you, makes you nostalgic, it could be a print ad or a poster. Which ones are your favourite?
